Ubuntu 24.04.1 Desktop VM(s) Become Unresponsive When Left Unattended

Ubuntu 24.04.1 VMs may become unresponsive when left unattended for a period of time. The error message returns as a 'SRA connection' issue.

This issue is due to some of the latest updates in Ubuntu's default display manager, GDM3. 

Resolution:

We recommend installing an alternative display manager, LightDM.

1. If unresponsive, power off the VM and then power it on
2. Log In to the OS
3. Open a terminal
4. Run the following command to install LightDM:
   

   sudo apt install lightdm

5. During installation, when prompted, select "LightDM" as default display manager
6. Once installation is complete, reboot the VM
7. Log into the OS
8. Open a terminal
9. Run the following command to check running display manager:
   

   systemctl status display-manager.service

   This will confirm if LightDM is running as the display manager.
